The Issue of Persecution – Part Two
The Path to Victory: Faith, Purity, and God's Justice
In the first part of this article, we surveyed the history of Christian persecution and its modern forms. In this second part, we consider how the New Testament equips believers to endure and ultimately overcome persecution — not by escaping it, but by passing through it in the strength that God provides.
The Promise That Grounds Endurance:
The foundation of Christian endurance under persecution is not stoic self-discipline — it is faith in a specific promise: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28). This is not a general optimism about how things tend to work out — it is a specific theological declaration that God is sovereignly at work in every circumstance, including and especially persecution, to accomplish His eternal purposes for His people.
Jesus made this promise directly: "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (Matt. 5:11–12). Persecution, in this perspective, is not evidence that God has abandoned His people — it is evidence that His people are walking in the footsteps of His prophets and of His Son.
The Role of Faith:
Faith is the first and most essential resource for the persecuted believer. Not faith as a psychological technique for maintaining positive feelings, but faith as trust in the living God who has spoken and who cannot lie. The persecuted believer, like Job, may not understand why what is happening to him is happening. But he can trust the character of the One in whose hands his life rests.
Peter wrote to scattered, persecuted believers: "In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith — more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire — may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." (1 Pet. 1:6–7). The trials are real and painful. But they are also purposeful: they are the furnace in which faith is refined and proved genuine.
The Role of Purity:
Peter's first letter was written precisely to address persecution, and it consistently connects the believer's endurance to the purity of his or her life. The persecuted believer who is also known for integrity, generosity, and genuine love disarms the most powerful accusation of the persecutor: that Christianity is a socially harmful movement.
"Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation." (1 Pet. 2:12). And: "For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil." (1 Pet. 3:17). Undeserved suffering borne with grace and integrity is itself a testimony to the reality and power of Christ.
Trusting in God's Justice:
One of the most difficult aspects of persecution is the apparent injustice of it — the innocent suffer while the guilty prosper. The Psalms of lament wrestle honestly with this experience (Pss. 37, 73, 94). The answer the Scriptures give is not that the injustice is an illusion but that its final account has not yet been rendered.
Paul writes to a persecuted church: "…it is indeed just of God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant relief to you who are afflicted…when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God." (2 Thess. 1:6–8). This is not a call to human vengeance — it is a call to trust God's justice, which will not ultimately fail. The persecutors will answer to God. The believer's role is not to take vengeance but to leave judgment to God: "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'" (Rom. 12:19)
The Strength of the Church:
The persecuted individual believer is not alone — he or she belongs to a community. The Church as a whole is the Body of Christ, and the New Testament consistently addresses persecution as a corporate reality that the community faces and endures together. When one member suffers, all suffer; when one is honored, all rejoice (1 Cor. 12:26). The community of prayer, mutual encouragement, practical support, and shared worship is the environment in which individual believers find the strength to endure.
The history of persecution bears this out. The Christians who survived persecution with their faith intact were almost invariably those who remained connected to their community. Isolation — physical, spiritual, or emotional — is the persecutor's most effective tool. The remedy is sustained communion with brothers and sisters in Christ.
The Ultimate Victory:
The final word on persecution is not suffering but victory. The risen Christ promised to the persecuted churches of Revelation: "Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Rev. 2:10). And at the end of the book, the great vision of God's new creation is placed before all who have suffered: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." (Rev. 21:4)
This is not escapism — it is the foundation of an endurance that can face the very worst that the world can do and say with Paul: "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." (Rom. 8:18)
